On Monday 11 November Westerley, Westcliff celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a visit by this year's President of the Methodist Conference, the Rev Helen Cameron. The President led a service of thanksgiving and celebration, attended by residents, staff, relatives, friends and members of the Southend Circuit, both staff and lay. The hymns were sung with gusto, the prayers thoughtful and the talk meaningful. As well as leading the short act of worship Helen brought the greetings of the whole Methodist Church to the staff and residents of Westerley. There wasn’t much room to move, but everyone was delighted to meet the President and share time with each other over a copious buffet lunch, all lovingly prepared by Westerley’s cook, Steve. Steve also made and decorated the anniversary cake, all delicious, and the President did us the honour of cutting it, before it was distributed for all to enjoy. Musicians entertained us during the day and a visiting magician delighted the assembled company with his tricks! After coffee-time, the son of a resident played on the piano pieces representative of each decade. Westcliff was well-decorated – including an arch of balloons over the main staircase. Well done to the manager Jayne and the staff team for a wonderful day. God Bless Westerley!
